Sunday Evening

Earlier this evening Rose and I went down the bottom field to fetch Coco, Ribeye and Mary. We enjoyed seeing the wild daylilies and hovering dragon flies. The dragon flies are glossy black with almost glow in the dark cobalt blue accents. The sound of gurgling brook was music to our ears. We laughed as Coco, Ribeye and Mary kicked up their heels and frolicked back to the barn. They ran along the bank of the stream, crushing wild mint beneath their hooves, perfuming our path back home.

Rose and I talked about how thankful we are for our time here on the farm. We wondered what sights and sounds and smells await us in Southwest Texas. What an adventure we have ahead of us!

creasote and sage

Creosote and sage, two of my favorite smells in the world! I have a bouquet of dried creosote in my bedroom, and when it is humid, the smell fills the room.

that is why we open the windows when we get close to Fort Stockton

The only creosote smell I know is from what they used to paint on old stables, now outlawed, and on the docks on the Jersey shore. Is that where it comes from? Something that actually grows? I miss that smell.

How much longer before you head to the Southwest? My prayers are often with you all as you prepare for this change.

Hi Debi! Yes, it is the same smell. The creosote bush is a dusty grey bush that is covered in pretty little yellow blossoms in the springtime. And the seed heads are white puffballs. It covers the floor of the chihuahuan desert, and gives off its characteristic smell in times of rain or humidity. Pungent, but I like it!
Hope things are going well for you over there.

Hi Tom. Thanks for you prayers. We can use them all the time! My goal is to head southwest the end of July, to get the kids registered in school. I have never experienced the flying by of days like this! Hard to believe we are past the middle of June.

Well, I sold my house a second time, waited until it looked like everything was a done deal, went to New Jersey to buy a new house, got home and the new buyer might not be able to close either. I'm trying to find some time to blog about it and catch everyone up. Is your farm on the market now?
